[Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] In a door hinge incorporating a fluid check, one of the hinge barrels is hollow and has a helical internal projection engaging a helical groove in a member which slides without rotating on a guide fixed to the other hinge member ; the sliding member is attached to a check piston working in the barrel. In the Figure the hollow barrel 5, on the hinge leaf 4 attached to the door, has a helical internal projection 14 with which a member 10 engages. The other hinge leaf 1 has short top and bottom lugs 2, 3, the lower one having fixed to it a plug 8 bearing in the lower end of the hinge barrel 5, while the upper one has an extension 18 bearing in a pair of gland rings at the top of the barrel 5 and forming a guide for the member 10, which is provided with grooves fitting feathers on the part 18 ; the member 10 is thus moved axially in the barrel by rotation of the hinge. The part of the barrel below the sliding member 10 is filled with oil, and a check piston 11 fixed to the member 10 works therein. The piston has a non-return ball valve 27, which opens during the opening movement of the door, and a needle valve 26 which throttles the oil flow to check the closing movement ; the needle valve is screw-threaded and has a flat upper part which engages in the forked end of a rotatable spindle 32 for adjustment. A lower compartment of the barrel contains a closing spring 7, but this may be dispensed with. In a modification, the bore of the barrel is made of larger diameter than the piston for parts of its length, so that the checking action only occurs towards the end of the closing movement and the final closing is unchecked. This check hinge may be incorporated in a double hinge for doors opening to either side.
