Abstract
385,321. Sparking-plugs. WELLER, J., Old Vine Cottage, West Horsley, Surrey. June 12, 1931, Nos. 17059, 18681, 19366, and 19672. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iv).] The outer surface of the insulator, or its metal sheathing B when this is provided, is made conical for a portion of its length equal to or greater than the largest diameter of the insulator and is seated in a correspondingly shaped conical housing formed in the wall of the combustion chamber. A gland engaging a threaded part of the housing serves to retain the insulator and may be winged or milled to facilitate its manipulation. Shoulders may be formed on the insulator or metal sheath above and below the gland. The metal sheath may be extended towards the narrow opening into the combustion chamber, its end forming one of the sparking terminals, or a removable terminal may be fitted in the opening. Windows may be made in the extended part of the sheath, providing access for cleaning. The conical seating may be situated between the valve seatings, its reduced opening permitting larger valve areas. Where the valves are in line the plug seating may be obliquely set to the plane of the valve guides. Specification 383,960 is referred to.
