Abstract

Ilmenite, sodium carbonate, and carbon are heated together, say to 800 DEG C., in a rotary furnace, and the resulting mass discharged into cold water. The disintegrated product is leached with weak basic lye, say at 80 DEG C., to remove alkali and soluble silicate and aluminate, sodium carbonate being recovered for re-use from the solution by treatment with carbon dioxide recovered in the heating process. Iron is largely removed from the residual mass by treatment with hot dilute sulphuric acid, and the titanium then brought into solution by concentrated sulphuric acid at initial temperatures of 150-180 DEG C. with subsequent increase to 200-225 DEG C. From the solution obtained titanium oxide is obtained by hydrolysis, composite pigments resulting if barium carbonate is first added.
