[Class 100 (iii).] Trimming type-bars.-Relates to arrangements in which either one or both of the trimming-knives can be adjusted to permit of the trimming of slugs on which the characters have either basal or head alignment. The knives 9, 10, Fig. 3, are connected t o slides 17, 24, which are separated b y springs 25, the effect of the springs being to draw the knives towards each other. The distance apart of the knives is determined by the engagement of abut. ments 18, 26 on the slides with faceted cam discs 19, 27, Fig. 6, mounted on shafts 20, 28, which are geared together, and can be rotated by a common handle 38. When the right-hand knife alone is to be adjusted, as in the case of slugs on which the characters have head alignment, a sleeve 31 carrying a gear 32, which connects the shaft 20 with the operating-handle, is moved along the shaft, so as to disconnect the shaft from its operating means. The camdisc 27, by which the right-hand knife is adjusted, is simultaneously replaced by a cam-disc 40, which affords a larger range of adjustment. The disc 40 is carried by a sleeve 35, which is movable along the shaft 28, so that it can engage the abutment 26 in place of the camdisc 27. The sleeves 31, 35 are connected together, and are operated by a common handle.
