[Class 59.] A machine for finegrinding, mixing, &c. paints &c. comprises a vertical rotating cylinder 1 and two or more segmental vertical pockets 5 closely surrounding the cylinder and open toward the same, for containing the material to be ground. As shown in Fig. 1 the shaft 3 of the grinding cylinder 1 is vertically slidable in a sleeve 17 of a bevel wheel 14, the upper part of the shaft being supported in a bearing 21 in a hopper 22. The bevel wheel 14 is driven by a wheel 15 and a pin 19 on the shaft of the wheel 15 lifts the shaft 3 at each rotation. Grinding pockets 5, Fig. 2, partly surround the cylinder 1 and each is provided with a grinding member 26 and a radial or tangential scraper member 27. The top of the pockets are open and register with openings in the bottom of the hopper 22. A stirrer 25 in the hopper is rotated by the shaft 3. When the hopper is removed from the pockets the latter may be swung out on adjustable hinge pins 9 after removing securing bolts 10. The grinding members 26 may be flat or curved and are slotted at the back where securing bolts 31, of a bracket 28, pass through, the upper end of the bracket being provided with a grinding member adjusting screw 29. The material ground by the grinding member on one pocket is scraped off the cylinder by the scraper on the other pocket and is collected in a trough 33. The pockets may be heated or cooled by means of jackets.
