Abstract

383,814. Wheel tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London. Feb. 10, 1932, No. 3957. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1931. [Class 144 (i).] In tyre-making apparatus wherein a tyre casing is built up flat upon a rotating drum operated by a friction drive, the control for the friction drive controls also means for operating upon the casing and/or braking means for the drum, and incorporates resilient means such that the various operations are effected by the progressive actuation of a single handle or pedal. As shown, the drum 6 is adapted to be driven by an internal continuously rotating friction wheel 11 which is mounted on a bell crank 9 pivoted at 8. The end 12 of the bell crank 9 is located between a weak spring 18 secured to the main framework and a strong spring 17 connected through links 14, 15, 16 to a pedal 13. The other end of the bell crank 9 abuts against a stop 27 on a pivoted brake-arm 24, this brake normally being held in contact with the drum against the action of a spring 26 by the spring 18, which also holds the rotating wheel 11 clear of the drum. A stop 23 on the link 14 is adapted to engage the end 22 of an arm 19 carrying a roller 21 for consolidating the tread. The stops 23, 27 are so adjusted that depression of the pedal first releases the brake arm 24, then brings the wheel 11 into engagement with the drum, the spring 17 serving as a rigid link during this stage ; when the wheel 11 is in engagement, further depression of the pedal extends the spring 17 and brings the roller 21 into operation. The inner surface of the drum may be lined with rubber or other suitable material for the engagement of the brake and driving wheel. In addition to the main roller 21, further pairs of rollers 28, 29 are provided for rolling down the bead &c., these rollers are mounted on a spring-pressed pivoted arm 30 which may be lifted out of engagement by a cam 35 on a hand-lever 33. The rollers 29 are provided with a spring mounting 36, and serve to roll down the edges of the casing. Sharpened rollers for trimming may also be provided. In the example given, the casing is built up inside out.
