Abstract
558,995. Vehicle tyres, making. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1942, No. 11609. Convention date, April 29. [Class 144 (i)] A tyre building apparatus comprises a rotary drum upon which the tyre is built, stitching means to stitch at least part of the material upon rotation of the drum, a rotary member driven by the drum and means for rotating the stitching means from the rotary member at a surface speed differing from that of the drum. A tyre carcase T, Fig. 4, or carcase T and tread and side walls U is built on a known collapsable drum 10 which has associated with it a member such as a pneumatic tyre 82 which is rotated by the drum 10 and itself drives, in turn, a wiping, rolling or stitching device 106 bearing upon the tyre built on the drum 10. The tyre 82 is carried bv arms 24 pivoted to a base 12, 14, the arms being operated by an air pressure piston and cylinder device 30, 34 to bring the tyre 82 into contact with the drum 10. The tyre 82 is rotatable by a shaft 80 mounted in bearings 84 which may be adjusted in slides 86 on the arms 24 and a shaft 94 is carried by links 90 pivoted to the shaft 80, the links 90 being adjustable in relation to the arms 24 by studs 98. A wiping, rolling or stitching device 106 is carried by the shaft 94 and is rotated by gearing 108, 110, 112 from the shaft 80 at a speed greater than that of the drum 10. The arms 24 and consequently the tyre 82 and wiping &c. device 106 may be held in inoperative position by a hooked shaped latch 52 engaging an arm 50 carried by the arms 24.
