Abstract

383,455. Pasteurizing milk &c. BUAAS MEJERIMASKINFABRIKER AFDELING AF AKTIESELSKABET FREDERIKSBERG METALVAREFABRIK, 98, Annebergvej, Aalborg, Denmark. Dec. 17, 1931, No. 34967. Convention date, April 20. [Class 49.] A heat regenerative pasteurizing apparatus is formed of two series of hollow conical elements defining passages 12 .. 23, Fig. 1, placed one on each side of the central plane of the apparatus and having collars at their apices and flanges at their bases abutting against each other and against the supporting casings 10, 11 which are mounted on and secured to each side of a central drum 2 forming part of the main frame 1 and containing the inlets and outlets for milk or other liquid to be pasteurized, steam, cooling water, and another cooling liquid, as well as communication passages between the two sets of elements. The collars and flanges of each series are clamped liquid-tight to one another and to the casings by screw-threaded spindles 8, 9 coaxial with the elements and with each other. External supporting casings 33, 34 are provided with which engage detachable locking members 35 having projections 51, Fig. 3, which engage in slots 48 on the spindles to secure the elements thereon. The spindles 8, 9 are slidably but not rotatably mounted on the frame by the engagement of screw-threaded portions thereof in correspondingly shaped portions on tubes 6, 7 supported so as to be rotatable but not slidable in bearings 3, 4 on the frame 1. The tubes 6, 7 can be rotated to cause axial movement of spindles 8, 9 for locking the elements in position by connecting them by toothed clutch members 36, 37 with a worm wheel 5 which is rotated by a worm 47 actuated through a two-speed gear 44, 45, 49, 50, Fig. 2, from a hand-wheel 42. The clutch members are actuated by links 39 secured to shafts 40, 41 rotatably mounted on the frame 1 and having operating handles 38. The milk &c. to be pasteurized enters through inlet 24 the space 12 and thence passes through spaces 13, 14, 15 in which it is heated by the pasteurized milk passing through adjacent passages 18 .. 21. It next flows through passage 25 in the drum 2 to spaces 16, 17 in which it is heated by steam or hot water which passes through inlet 28 to space 22, then to space 23 from which it is led away through a lower outlet in the drum. The milk next flows through passage 26 to spaces 18 .. 21 in the other series for preheating the untreated milk. If the milk is to be cooled still further, additional elements are provided for cooling with water and then with brine or other cooling liquid. Channels 57, 58, 59 carry away any leakage. In a modification, to enable the elements to be pushed out along the spindles 8, 9 for cleaning, the spindles are hollow and have a toothed rod 52, Fig. 5, sliding therein. The rod is engaged by a toothed wheel 53, mounted on the locking member 35, on rotation of which it is pushed out, the member 35 is then detached and the elements are slid along the rod. One or more additional supporting rods 55 slidably mounted in bearings 56 may also be provided. In another form the conical elements 61, Fig. 7, have concentric projecting rings 62 on one surface connected by angular projections 64 so that when in contact with the surface 63 of the adjacent cone a closed passageway is formed through which the liquid circulates.
