Abstract

421,336. Pasteurizing milk &c. PATTISON, E. W., 52, Deansgate, Arcade, Manchester.- (Keskusosunsliike Hankkija r. 1.; 2, Arkadiankatu, Helsingfors) June 15, 1933, No. 17063. [Class 49] [See also Group XIII] Heat-exchange apparatus for use in pasteurizing milk &c. of the kind comprising an assemblage of heatexchanging elements in the form of ribbed and plain discs forming sinuous passages between them through which the milk and a heating medium can be fed in countercurrent has the ribbed discs constructed as grates to facilitate cleaning. As shown, the ribbed discs 23 consist each of a ring traversed by parallel bars 32 and having circumferential packing rings 39, 40 to form a tight joint with the plain discs 41, forming a closed passage 72 between each pair of adjacent ribs, each rib being recessed at one side, the recesses alternating on each side, to connect the passages 72 and give a continuous zig-zag channel. The ring has lugs 27, 28 each having a port 30 communicating with the zig-zag channel by passages 31, and a port 29 surrounded by packing rings 37, 38 so that it does not communicate with the channel. The plain discs 41 have apertures 45-48 which coincide with ports 29, 30 so that the passages of successive discs may be placed in communication with one another. with the ports 30, 29 in the same position, in which case the liquid will pass in parallel through all the passages, or in reversed position on which the liquid will pass in parallel through the passages in alternate discs only and the discs can be arranged for counterflow of the liquid. The discs 23, 41 have lugs 24 which engage with two horizontal supporting bars carried by frame members 1, 2, Fig. 1, the discs being clamped thereon between a header 3 fixed to the frame 1 and a header 13 which slides on the bars and is controlled by a screw spindle 12 mounted on a yoke 10 carried by the frame 2 and acting on the header through a thrust bearing 21 and springs 18, 19 protected by a cover 20. The header 13 has pipes 14, 15 for supplying and discharging the milk and the header 3 has a pipe 8 for supplying steam or other heating medium and a pipe 9 for diverting the milk back through the apparatus. A disc 49 constructed like discs 23 but adjoined by plain discs in which some of the apertures are omitted divides the assemblage into two zones, to one of which the circulation of the heating medium is restricted. The disc 49 has two lateral ports, one for discharge of the heating medium and the other for connection to the pipe 9. The milk passing into the apparatus through pipe 14 flows in parallel through channels 53-59, where is is heated by the treated milk passing through adjacent channels 64-71 to the exit pipe 15, and through a byepass in disc 49 and finally in parallel through channels 52-50 where it is heated by steam &c. flowing through adjacent channels 62-60 and from which it is fed by pipe 9 to disc 49 and channels 64-71. The liquid may be made pass through the discs 23 in series by employing discs 41 in which some of the channels are omitted. For cleaning, the discs can be turned individually out of the assemblage into a cleaning trough arranged beside the assemblage.
