[Class 94 (i).] A press for baling waste paper comprises a box A in which a platen D is adapted to be moved vertically. The platen is carried by a girder D<1> riveted to a member d<1> passing through slots d in the box, and formed with screwed sleeves engaging vertical screws E. The screws are rotated by a motor F through spur and bevel gears f, f<1>. The motor is controlled by a reversing switch G operated by a rope g passing over a pulley g<1>, stops g<2> thereon being engaged by a projecting lug g<3> on the platen at the extreme limits of its travel. When the platen reaches the bottom of its travel its direction is automatically reversed, and on arrival at the top the current is cut off, the platen remaining stationary for another charge. An overload circuit breaker stops the drive when the pressure on the platen reaches a predetermined degree. A door B is hinged to the front side a of the press-box, and is adapted to fall forward within the hopper A<1> and to form the bottom thereof in the filling position. A second door B<1> is arranged at the bottom of the side a for the removal of the bale. The end a<2> of the box is hinged at the top and is mounted on rollers a4 so that it can be swung outwards by toggle mechanism a<5>, a<6> to relieve the pressure on the bale prior to removal.
