Abstract
1,174,467. Multi-platen press; hydraulic presses; laminating presses. G. CECCHI. 31 March, 1967, No. 14977/67. Headings B5A, B5F and B5N. A multi-platen press, which may be used for laminating veneering or moulding and which has an uninterrupted working cycle, comprises a fixed housing 1 within which a frame 2, actuated by an electric motor 6, is reciprocable. A stack of platens 3 actuated by hydraulic pressure means 4 are .located within the frame 2. Pivoted to each side of housing 1 are a series of tongs - 9 separable by means of coaxial pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders 11 and 12 respectively, the tongs being insertable between edge flanges 3<SP>1</SP> of adjacent platens 3. In operation, the frame is vertically reciprocated within the housing, movement being terminated when a pair of platens to be separated reaches switch 19. The tongs are then pivoted to a position between flanges 3<SP>1</SP> and are opened, against the action of cylinders 4, by cylinders 11 and 12. A feeding device comprising a table 21, actuated by a spring biased piston 23 and carrying fresh material 22 to be pressed, is inserted between the opened platens. The finished piece is pushed on to conveyer 25 by a pivoted flap 21<SP>1</SP> mounted on the front of the table. The piston and table are then quickly retracted with the aid of the biasing spring so that the fresh material is deposited by its own inertia between the platens. The platens are then reclosed, the tongs 9 de-actuated, the frame indexed forward so that the next platen pair is aligned with the switch and the cycle repeated.
