Abstract

382,274. Coating with metals. SCHUELER, J. L., 1611, West Mulberry Street, Kokomo, Indiana, U.S.A. July 13, 1931, No. 20144. [Class 82 (ii).] To smooth and equalize a molten metallic coating on a wire the wire on leaving the metal bath is treated to remove the dross and skimmings and some of the excess coating metal and is then subjected to a wiping flame to equalize the remaining coating. Each of a plurality of wires B on leaving the molten metal bath A passes over a notched friction block C which removes the dross, skimmings, &c. and then through a flame wiper consisting of a pipe 10 provided with burner openings 11 and arranged parallel with the direction of travel of the wire. Each of the pipes 10 is connected to a gas supply pipe 12, valves 15 being provided so that the volume of gas passing to each pipe 10 can be independently regulated. The supplies of combustible gas and pressure fluid to the pipe 12 are controlled by valves 13, 14 so that the mixture may be regulated. The flames issuing from the openings 11 are preferably reflected back on to the wire by angularly adjustable refractory blocks 16 with concave reflecting surfaces, so that both sides of each wire are wiped. Alternatively two pipes 10, 10a, Fig. 4, with burner openings 11, 11a in staggered relationship may be arranged on the opposite sides of each wire B. Means may be provided so that the intensity of the flame or flames is automatically controlled by variations in the speed of travel of the wire so that if the wire breaks or is obstructed the flame is shut off.
