Abstract

Apparatus for filtering and purifying used lubricating oil comprises a number of thin layers of finely divided pulverulent material alternating with layers of fibrous material, a chemical having an alkaline reaction in the first pulverulent layer to prevent clogging by soaps, and an animal membrane for filtering and clarifying the oil after it has passed through the pulverulent and fibrous layers. The membrane 2 consists of chamois skin and is enclosed in a bag made of burlap or other fabricated material and supported by a screen 1. Above the membrane are layers 4 of cotton batting or the like, the upper surfaces of which have been covered with fuller's earth. The top layer of fuller's earth is covered by a layer 6 of burlap and above this is a buffer layer consisting of a cloth bag 8 surrounded by a metallic screen 11 and containing a thin layer 9 of fuller's earth treated with air-slaked or other lime, sodium carbonate, sodium borate, or the like. Above the buffer layer is a settling-pan 12 provided with apertures 13 in its walls but having an imperforate bottom. The filter may be supported at the bottom of a flange cylindrical <PICT:0382001/III/1> oil tank 15 by means of bolts 22, a spacing ring 17, and a clamping ring 18. The screen 1 and membrane 2 extend between the rings 17, 18 and the burlap 6 between the flange 16 and the ring 17. Joints are made by gaskets 19, 21 soaked in water and coated with glycerine The spaces between the cotton-batting layers 4 and the ring 17 are filled with fuller's earth. Heated oil is introduced into the tank by a pipe 25 in contact with or adjacent to a ring 24 adjustably suspended above the pan 12.
