Abstract

381,617. Fluid-pressure brakes. LEECH, K. H. and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. July 13, 1931, No. 20101. [Class 103 (i).] A control valve for fluidpressure brakes, more particularly motor vehicle vacuum brakes, comprises a slide or piston valve 5 adapted to be moved by the brake pedal first to close the atmospheric port 6 and then to lift a poppet valve 8 opening communication between the brake cylinder 2 and a source of vacuum 13, the valve 8 being reclosed to maintain a definite braking effort when the pressure in the brake cylinder corresponds to the effort exerted on the brake pedal. The piston valve 5 is moved by means of a spring 26 and a rod 23 and moves the valve 8 by shoulders 9, 10. The valves move to close both ports when the pressures acting on the valve balance the pressure of the spring 26 and thus provide a lap position. The brake pedal is connected to a rod 21 and first moves a lever 22 about its connection 27 to the rod 23 to operate a lever 28 connected to the brake transmission to take up slack therein and then moves the lever 22 about its connection 29 to the lever 28 to operate the valve. The lever 28 is fixed to a spindle 31 which operates the master cylinder 4 of the hydraulic transmission. The brake piston 34 is connected to a lever 32 loosely mounted on the spindle 31 and having a lug 35 engaging a shoulder 36 on the lever 28.
