[Class 112.] Feed by dogs.-The length of work feed in a tufting or sewing-machine is varied by selectively engaging a yoke which operates the feed mechanism with one of a number of cams of different sizes mounted on the main driving shaft of the machine. The invention is described as applied to the tufting machine described in Specification 381,553, wherein the work is fed by a four-motion feed dog 24, Fig. 3, supported on a feed arm 20 and cooperating with a presser-foot of usual construction. The forward and rearward work feeding movements are imparted to the arm 20 by a yoke 22, which can be swung about its pivot axis 131 to engage any one of a series of cams 23, 23a, 23b mounted on the main shaft 8 of the machine and so controls the rocking movement imparted to a pivoted frame 21 which carries the arm 20. A spring 142 maintains the yoke 22 in engagement with the selected cam. The feed dog 24 is raised and lowered by a cam 98, Fig. 3, on the main shaft 8 in engagement with a bracket 96, 97 secured to the underside of the bar 20. Lubricating material 95 may be employed for oiling the mechanism.
