Abstract

381,190. Electrolytic cells. POTTS, H. E., 12, Church Street, Liverpool.- (Hooker Electrochemical Co. ; 60, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) June 23, 1931, No. 6407/32. Divided on 381,183. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41.] A cathode-diaphragm structure of the kind employed in cells for the production of alkali from brine is made by bringing a suspension of fibrous material such as asbestos into contact with the active surface of a perforated cathode and forcing the liquid through the perforations by differential pressure. The fibrous material may be kept in suspension by submerged jets of liquid so balanced as to give a uniform coating. The suspension medium may be a liquid having a substantially greater specific gravity and viscosity than water in which case no agitation is necessary. A saturated solution of sodium chloride containing a small amount of sodium hydroxide and having a specific gravity of 1.2 is suitable. The cathode material may be stamped and perforated metal or may be woven of double crimped steel wire. The cathode may consist of a closed hollow member; fibrous material is deposited on the outside by immersion of the cathode in the suspension with the inner space connected to a vacuum. By the above method a diaphragm free from joints or seams may be deposited on a cathode having an irregular or warped surface such as the cathode assembly described in Specification 381,183.
