[Class 59.] A grinding mill comprises a horizontal trough 1 in which rotates a number of discs 3 mounted on a shaft 2. Grinding bodies and material to be ground are placed between the discs and are agitated thereby with consequent grinding of the material. As shown, a series of perforated discs 3 mounted on a shaft 2 rotates in a stationary trough 1 into which material is fed at one end 15 and is discharged at the other through a perforated screen 16 to an outlet 17. The screen may be provided with a movable plate by which the area of the screen is varied. Partitions 13 surround the peripheries of the discs and perforated partitions 14 are interposed between the discs filling partly or wholly the cross section of the trough. Balls &c. are mixed with the material and during rotation of the discs 3 those balls in close proximity to the discs are carried round whilst those in contact with the partitions 14 partake of a rolling movement. The diameters of the discs and the cross section of the trough may vary. The partitions may revolve and the size of the chambers and the diameters of the balls used may vary. Plates may be let down on each side of the discs before the mill stops in order to prevent excessive torque on the shaft when starting up or the discs may be adapted to be coupled to the driving shaft or they may be connected by a flexible connection such as a spiral spring. The trough may rest on movable supports so that it may be shaken or partly turned when starting up. More than one shaft with discs may be used and the mill may be inclined.
