[Class 59] A pulverizing- machine comprises a rotor provided with spaced discs rotating in a casing, the discs which may be plain corrugated &c. dividing the casing into chambers which are provided with grinding bodies. Rotation of the discs provides a bridging or jamming action on the grinding bodies to elevate and cascade them over the rotor shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, a shaft 21 provided with waved or corrugated discs 29, 30 separated by spacing cylinders 51, revolves in a stationary drum 1. The discs separate the drum into chambers which contain balls of varying sizes and these balls are carried round by the discs with a lateral contracting and expanding action until they are discharged over the spacing cylinders 51 onto the mass of balls below as shown in Fig. 3. During this lifting action, the fine material percolates through the mass of balls to the bottom of the drum and passes under the disc to the next chamber. Air enters the drum 1 through port 13 and passes under a partition 55 in each chamber thereby carrying off fines to an outlet 14. Material is fed to the centre of the drum through main inlet 9 or through auxiliary inlets 10 ...12 and after being ground is discharged through outlets 15, 16 at opposite ends of the drum. The distance between the peripheries of the discs and drum may be such as to permit the balls to pass from one chamber to the other, e.g. the disc 33, Fig. 1, and in a modification the balls may pass from one chamber to the next throughout the mill, the discharge taking place through adjustable grids at each end of the drum, or one grid may be closed so that the material fed to that end of the mill travels the entire length of the mill before it is discharged. The drum may have water jackets 6, Fig. 3, discharge plugs 59 and manholes 56. The drum may be tapered towards each end and mounted on trunnions and rotated for batch grinding.
