[Class 83 (iii).] Boring heads.-A boring tool for the cylinders of rotary pumps and engines which are slightly oblate in cross section comprises a cutter mounted slidably in a rotating head and with its rear end kept in contact with the wall of the cylinder, so that at two diametrically opposite points the cutter does not operate on the cylinder. The head 4 is keyed to a lathe spindle 2, and is provided with a diametrical groove 5 across its face, recesses 6 in the opposite walls of the groove and at opposite ends thereof receiving rollers 7. A bar 8 is slidably mounted in this groove being retained therein by keeper plates 10, 11, secured by studs 12 and nuts 13. A cutter 17 is secured to one end of the bar 8, and the other end is provided with a foot 9 disposed at right-angles to the bar 8. A contractile band 14 is fitted around the studs 12 and around a stud 15 provided on the bar 8, so that the foot 9 is always kept in contact with the wall of the cylinder 1. The cylinder is mounted concentric with the lathe spindle, being vertically adjustable on a standard 3 ; and the boring tool is placed vertically, the bit being adjusted to touch the wall of the cylinder ; the cylinder is then lowered a distance corresponding to the greatest depth of the cut required, and the cutter is then drawn away from the wall by the action of the band 14, so that in the two vertical positions of the rotating head no cut is made.
