Abstract
Rancidity, discoloration, ageing, &c. due to oxidation is prevented in oils, fats, soaps, and fatty acids, by incorporating a small proportion e.g. 0,01-0,15 per cent of a diary lalkane, a diaryl ether, or a diaryl amine, of the kind represented by the formul --HO--Ar--Y--Ar<1>--Z X--Ar--NH--Ar<1>--Z (NH2)n--Ar--NH--Ar<1>--Q in which Ar, Ar<1> are the same or different aromatic hydrocarbon residues; Y is an oxygen atom or a methylene or substituted methylene group; Z is hydrogen when Ar and Ar<1> are both naphthyl residues, but otherwise is hydrogen, hydroxyl, or alkoxyl; X is hydroxyl or alkoxyl; Q is hydrogen or an amino-group; and n is 1 or 2. Derivatives of diphenyl methane, diphenyl ether, diphenylyl ether, diphenylamine, naphthylamine, diaminonaphthalene, naphthyl and di-naphthyl ether, anilio - diphenyl, amino - naphthol, benzyl - napthol, and benzyl-naphthalene are referred to, including p-hydroxy-diphenyl-methane, p and 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxy-diphenyl ether, p-hydroxy-diphenylamine, p-phenetyl-d-naphthylamine, 4:4<1>-diamino-diphenylamine, and 2,4 diamino-4<1> hydroxy-diphenylamine. Examples show the treatment of white olive castile soap, swine fat, coconut oil, and cottonseed oil. Derivatives of diphenylmethane, diphenyl ether, diphenylyl ether, diphenylamine, naphthylamine, diaminonaphthalene, naphthyl and di-naphthyl ether, anilio-diphenyl, amino-naphthol, benzyl-naphthol, and benzyl-naphthalene are referred to, including p-hydroxy-diphenyl-methane, p and 4-41 dihydroxy-diphenyl ether, p-hydroxydiphenylamine, p-phenetyla -naphthylamine, 4-41-diamino-diphenylamine, and 2-4 diamino-41 hydroxy-diphenylamine. Examples show the treatment of swine fat, coconut oil, and cottonseed oil.
