Abstract

Coatings for medicines intended to pass unchanged through the stomach but to come into action in the intestines consist of mixtures of cellulose esters or ethers with organic compounds soluble in the intestines, such as triglycerides, waxes of low melting point, lipoids, lecithin, cholesterin, and bile acids. The mixtures may be used for coating pills or for the manufacture of capsules. Specified mixtures are cellulose nitrate and olive oil dissolved in alcohol-ether; cellulose acetate and castor oil dissolved in acetone and applied as an outer coating to a pill previously coated with sugar-gelatine; and nitro-cellulose and lecithin dissolved in alcohol-ether and used for making capsules. Coatings of cellulose esters or ethers without admixture are referred to.
