Abstract

Preparations of aspirin for external application to the body are obtained by dissolving it in a solvent which is substantially inert to the aspirin, is substantially free from water, alkalies, and water-soluble acids, and, preferably, is insoluble in water. Solvents having rubefacient properties may be used or a rubefacient non-solvent may be added. Specified solvents are glycol-dioleate, camphor oil, lard, lard oil, cottonseed or other seed oils, hydrogenated oils, cocoa butter, palm oil, coconut oil, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate, sulphonated oils, oleic acid, petrolatum and essential oils such as peppermint, pine and lavender oils. According to an example a liniment contains aspirin, acetone, methyl salicylate, glycoldioleate, oil of cassia, oleoresin of capsicum, oil of cloves, oil of camphor and cottonseed oil.
