Medicines for internal use; capsules; special shapes and forms; coatings for medicines.- Medicines such as natural or synthetic camphor, santal oil, ethereal oils, alkaloids, and brominated or iodized fats, which will not dissolve in the mixtures of gelatine, glycerine, and water commonly used in making pastilles, are dissolved in an anhydrous mixture of gelatine and glycerine. The pastilles are intended to be swallowed whole, and may be rendered tasteless by means of a layer of non-medicated gelatine, and may be treated with formaldehyde to prevent digestion until the reach the intestine. The non-medicated coating may be applied by coating both sides of a slab of the medicated composition with a solution of gelatine, drying, and stamping out tablets or pearls, or pastilles without a coating may be immersed in alcohol to dissolve the medicament out of the external layer and then washed and dried. Examples are given relating to mixtures of one part gelatine to three parts glycerine medicated respectively with camphor, synthetic camphor, chenopodium oil, camphor and papaverine and a salt of quinine.
