[Class 130.] To deposit rows of cigarettes in receptacles, a holder is lowered intermittently a distance equal to the height of a layer of cigarettes and after a number of such movements the holder is lowered a greater distance to transfer layers of cigarettes to the next compartment in the holder, and when all the compartments are full the holder is lowered a greater distance to transfer the layers of cigarettes into the next holder. The cigarettes are thrust from a conveyer belt on to a plate in front of a holder until the foremost cigarette actuates an electric contact and a slide pushes the layer of cigarettes from the belt into the holder. As shown in the Figures, the cigarettes from a continuous rod machine are delivered on to belts 4, 5 and are passed by rotating brushes 10 on to plates 6, 7 until the foremost cigarettes engage stops 8, 9 which close an electric circuit and cause a shaft 23 to rotate. Cams 24 on the shaft 23 actuate, through rods 27, a shaped slide 11<1>, 11<11> to push the layers of cigarettes from the plates on to the holders S. One of the cams 24 also actuates a pawl 32 and a ratchet wheel 34 to rotate intermittently shafts 33 and move endless chains 14 on which the holders are carried. A cover-plate 35, Fig. 5, moved through cams 36 on the ratchet wheel determines the amount which the holders are lowered, the plate being arranged so as to prevent the pawl engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel and producing the three different movements referred to. A projection 37 on the ratchet wheel 34, acting through levers 39, 40 forces the filled holders out of the machine.
