This invention has reference to a machine for the packing of cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars or of similar objects in paper boxes or similar containers in such a manner as to prevent injury thereto and to arrange them in a certain order. In the packing of these commodities it has been usual in the trade to arrange the uppermost layer of the cigarettes or the like so as to present to the user one certain surface, that is to say, that side of the goods in which the printing or other instructive or advertising matter located at or near the mouthpiece is uniformly placed on top in the different pieces of said layer. This object is being accomplished by placing the layer of cigarettes or the like on a sheet metal plate or board upon which the turning over of any cigarettes and the like which may not present the proper surface to the user is effected by hand, as heretofore practiced, whereupon the said charging plate or board is introduced into the box or container and the'cigarettes are caused to remain therein by withdrawing the plate or board and sweeping the cigarettes off the plate by a gentle movement of the hand of the operator and then arranging them in theproper manner.
Now this invention has for one of its important objects to carry out the packing and the insertion of the upper layer of the cigarettes or the like by mechanical means, so as to cause the uppermost layer to first pass through a turning instrumentality before their being inserted in the box, said instrumentality being so arranged as to be adapted to turn the reversed cigarettes through 180 degrees. The device according to this invention is further distinguished by operating very rapidly and almost automatically so that the output of packed boxes can be increased .to a great multiple of what may be accomplished by manualoperation.
The invention will be further and more particularly describedby reference to theaccompanyingdrawing showing by way of exemplification an embodiment of the invention in connection with a packing machine for cigarettes of oval cross section, Fig. 1 being a plan view of the entire machine, and Figures 2 and 3 showing the most essential part of the machine respectively in side view and in top plan View. Figures l to 9 are details of the machine referred to. In Figures 10 and 11 a cigarette box is shown in perspective view and in two different stages of the filling operation.
The boxes or containers 1 are placed upon an apron 2 and are moved in succession along and in front of an insertion and positioning device for the dust sheet 3, a charging device 4 for the first layer of cigarettes, insertion means for the card board leaf 5 or in front of a charging plate or board 6and along charging means of special construction for the second layer of cigarettes, whereupon the charged boxes pass to feeding means 7 which conduct the boxes tothe closing, wrapping or labelling assessment or tax-band attaching means.
The charging means for the second layer of cigarettes comprises, similar to the device 4 for the first layer, an otherwise known dividing element for the separation of the cigarettes to be inserted in a charginghopper 8, and it further comprises a turn-table 9 with for instance four groups of rotatably mounted tubes or sleeves 10 with operating and disengaging means for the turningdevices 11 and pushing means 12 for the removing of the cigarettes from the rotatable tubes or sleeves and the feeding thereof to special inserting sleeves 13 from which the cigarettes are introduced into the boxes 1 or are placed on the feedingplateor board 6.
From the feeding hopper 8 of the dividing device the cigarettes are caused to slidingly move between vertically movable partitions 14:, and the lowest layer of cigarettes which have been properly straightened by the partitions is pushed into the tubes 10 by recipr0- eating slides 15. The bottom plate 16 of the casing or shaft which is formedby the walls or partitions 14 is provided with ribs for the arranging of the cigarettes and is displaceable in the transverse direction, and by means of this insertion plate the cigarettes are first brought into a uniform inclined position before being introduced into the tubes 10, this inclined position corresponding to that which the cigarettes are to assume after having been placed into the box, and in accordance therewith the tubes 10 have inclined oval insertion openings for the cigarettes. At two opposite points windows or inspection openings 17 are provided on the tubes 10 and they also carry slots 33 at their extremities projecting from the bushing 18. On the turning means 11 displaceable carriers or carriages 19 are arranged which may be moved in the direction of the tubes 10 and in this movement rotatably journaled'blades 21 which may be secured in position by a locking ball or the like are adapted to enter and become engaged with the slots 33. The trunnions 22 of the blades 21 are connected by means of a train of gearing 23 which operates in the direction of the rotation of the blades 21 to the bevel gear wheels 24 which are engaged by the toothed segments 25 of spring-acting feeling levers 26 or keys. After the blades 21 have been forced into engagement with the tubes 10 the operation of the keys 26 will cause the tubes or sleeves 10 to be turned through 180 degrees. This turning is effected in the case of the sleeves or tubes the respective cigarettes of which are located with their printing or advertising matter downwards, which may be observed in the inspection openings 17. Instead of tubes 10 other holding means may be employed for the cigarettes, for instance such as will become engaged only with the ends of the cigarettes.
Upon a sudden, abrupt turning movement being imparted to the turn-table 9 the sleeves or tubes 10 are brought in front of an ejection slide 12 provided with pins 27 which feeds the cigarettes into special sleeves 13 arranged in alignment with the tubes 10. The sleeves 13 are adapted to be separately displaced in a sliding guide 29 reciprocably connected to a system of levers 28, while projections or studs 30 of the sleeves 13 enter radiating guide slots 31 on a plate 32. In the position according to Fig. 4 of the drawing the sleeves 13 have been moved away from each other while, after having been moved into the position shown in Fig. 3 they have been moved towards each other sufficiently to be then placed closely adjacent to each other. During this movement the sleeves 13 are moving above the box that has been meanwhile introduced into the machine and stationary ejecting rods or bolts 34 cause the cigarettes to be removed from the displaced sleeves 13 and cause them to pass onto the feeding plate 6 which has been inserted in an inclined position in the box 1, and during this action the recess 35 at the end of the sleeve allows of tilting the cigarettes gently, so as not to injure them during the tilting and sliding movement.
The operation of the machine may be effected from the shaft 37 operated by the pulley 36 and which by means of the bevel gear wheels 38 and roller 39 imparts the longitudinal movement to the conveying apron 2 while by means of a cam disk 40 a slide 41 for moving the boxes or containers onto the apron 2, and by means of a cam disk 12 a pulling member or pincers 4-3 for the pulling out of the dust sheet 3 to be cut off from the web or band 44 are actuated. The operation of the charging or feeding device 41 is effected by means of the cam disk 44, while a shaft 17 operated by bevel gear wheels 16 and carrying a cam disk 48 is used for the operation of the filling and charging means 8. The movement of the charging and feeding means 5 and 6 is effected by means of a. cam disk 4:9 and the movement of the turn table 9 causes the operation of a cam disk 50 and of a looking gear 51, 52. For the operation of the ejecting slide 12 a cam disk 53 is provided, while the cam disk 5 L serves for the movement of the ejecting slide 7 The small circles 55 and 56 in the drawing indicate diagrammatically the position of the attendants.
It should be understood that the invention is not restricted to the particular exemplilication herein shown and described as an illustration of its principles, but it may find expression in other embodiments and may be modified according to requirements and the convenience of the operator, and without thereby deviating from the spirit and scope of the invention, as expressed in the acco1npanying claims.
I claim 1. In a device of the kind described, rotatably mounted holders for holding a plurality of articles, and turning means engaging the holders for rotating the same so as to turn the articles side for side.
2. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of independently journaled rotatable holders for a plurality of articles, turning means for rotating said holders and the articles therein through an 180 arc, and displaceable ejecting means opposite the holding means and engageable with the articles. 3. In a device of the kind described parallel, longitudinally divided holding means fora plurality of articles, turning means for said holding means, axially movable with relation thereto, operating means for the turning means, additional holding means, associated with the first-mentioned holding means, ejecting means for transferring the articles from the first holding means to the additional holding means, a container supporting means movably disposed near the additional holding means, and pushing means engageable with the additional holding means, and adapted to transfer the articles to a container supported by said container supporting means. 4. In a device of the kind described parallel, longitudinally divided holding means for a plurality of elongated articles, turning means for said articles, axially movable with relation thereto, operating means for the turning means, additional, crosswise reciprocable holding means parallel with and in alignment with the first mentioned holding means, ejecting means transferring the articles from the first mentioned holding means to the additional holding means, container supporting means, movably disposed near the additional holding means, and transferring means axially movable with relation to the additional holding means and adapted to transfer the articles to acontainer supported by said container supporting means.
5. In a device of the kind described, an intermittently rotatable turn-table, a plurality of groups of parallel, longitudinally divided holding means for a plurality of elongated articles, substantially radially disposed on said table, operating means for the table, turning means for the articles substantially in axial alignment with the holding meansand displaceable axially thereof, additional, crosswise reoiprocable holding means opposite one group of the first mentioned holding means and in parallelism therewith, means to transfer the articles from the first mentioned to the additional holding means, and'means to remove them from said additional holding means.
6. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of parallel, vertically angularly disposed holding means for elongated articles, feeding means for feeding the articles to said holding means, and turning means engageable with said holding means, means associated with the holding means for permitting inspection of the articles, and ejecting and transferring means operatively associated with said holding means.
7. In a device of the kind described, a
plurality of substantially horizontally positioned, vertically angularly and uniformly inclined cross-sectionally oval holding means for elongated articles, reciprocable feeding means for feeding the articles to said holding means, and turning means engageable with said holding means, and ejecting and transferring means operatively associated with said holding means.
8. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of substantially horizontally disposed, parallel holding means for elongated articles, feeding means for feeding the articles to said holding means, turning means engageable with the holding means and axially displaceable with relation thereto, operat ing means for said turning means, and ejecting and transferring means engaging said holding means and the articles therein.
9. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of substantially horizontally disposed, parallel holding means for elongated articles, feeding means for feeding the articles to said holding means, turning and rotating means engageable with the holding means and operating means for said turning means, container supporting means movably located 1n the vicinity of said holding means, a charging plate, slantingly and removable disposed in said container, and means for transferring the articles from the holding means to acontainer carried by the container supporting means.
10. In a cigarettepacking machine in combination an intermittently rotatable turn-table, a plurality of groups of sideways inclined, cross-sectionally elongated, parallel holding means for the cigarettes, substantially radially disposed on said table, feeding means for feeding the cigarettes to the holding means, rotating means, engageable with the holding means and axially displaceable with relation thereto, inspection means on the holding means, additional holding means confronting one group of the first mentioned holding means and parallel there with, conveying means for containers movable crosswise of the holding means, means to transfer the cigarettes from the first mentioned to the additional holding means, and means to eject the cigarettes from the ad ditional holding means into the container, and operating means for said transferring and ejecting means.
