[Class 5 (ii).] An appliance for maintaining a supply of water for poultry or the like, comprises a siphon feed device having a stationary tube and a movable tube both being adapted to be partly immersed in a water supply vessel, the movable tube affording communication between said water supply vessel and a drinking trough, whereby on raising the movable tube above the water level in the stationary tube the flow of water ceases and on again releasing said tube its quick return re-establishes the flow. The siphon, which supplies the drinking trough B with water from a reservoir A comprises a sheath C, open at its upper end and provided at its lower end with a small inlet D. Inside the sheath C slides a tube or plunger E open at its lower end and partly closed at its upper end by a U-tube F, part of the space between the tubes E and F being filled with lead or other metal G. An extension H of the sheath C comprises a notch J to support the tube F in its raised position. In a modification, Fig. 2, the inlet of the tube F is flared at K to engage the side of the sheath C, the tube E and filling G being omitted. The siphon is secured to a bracket L supporting the trough B. The rate of supply to the reservoir which may be in the form of a tank T, is controlled by a float valve comprising a float W operating a lever U with an elastic valve seat N<1> pivoted on an antisplash shield S on an inlet nozzle R : the shield S is locked in position by a pin 1 engaging apertures in the vessel T, the pin being adjustable. A series of troughs B may be supplied from a reservoir Q by means of a supply vessel T and service pipe X, siphons of the form shown in Fig. 2 being screwed into the latter to supply each trough individually.
