[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 13, 1931.] [Class 87 (ii).] A press for fixing wheels on work tables or for removing tyres or both, comprises a stepped table 7 mounted adjustably on a standard 10 resting in a base-plate 12 and prevented from turning therein by a cross-pin 11. An upper shaft comprises a lower screwed portion engaging the nut 8, an intermediate squared portion with serrations on two opposite surfaces to engage the spring latches 5 of the guided pressure platen 2, another screwed portion (not shown in Fig. 1) above the squared portion and finally a recess e at the upper end. By inserting a bar in the recess, the shaft can be rotated to move axially through the nut 8 and thus cause the platen 2 to exert pressure on the upper side of a wheel laid on the table 7. The upper screwed portion receives a nut 15, Fig. 2, rotatable by capstan bars 22 to depress a guided frame 19 of inverted T-irons on the shaft. The frame carries guided jaws 20 which are inserted between the tyre and the wheel rim so that when the frame 19 is depressed relatively to the wheel, the jaws force the tyre off the wheel rim. In the illustrated forms, Fig. 1 shows the appliance as used for fixing wheels only, and Fig. 2 as used for removing tyres only, but it may be used for both simultaneously as described above. When used for one operation only, the construction of the central shaft can be modified to omit the screwed or serrated parts necessary for performing both operations.
