Abstract

376,927. Stays. GRAMOPHONE CO., Ltd., Hayes, Middlesex, and SEYMOUR, H. R. J., 25, Selby Road, Ealing, London. June 19, 1931, No. 17868. [Class 65 (i).] In a stay for cabinet lids, of the type in which a strut pivoted in the lid passes between and bears on two members in the box in such a manner as to load a spring as the lid is lowered, at least one of the members is carried on a spring-controlled rocking member. The distance between the bearing members is unchanged as the lid is moved, and the members may both be carried on the rocking member. The bearing members engage cam surfaces on the stay, against which they are pressed by the spring to resist the falling tendency of the lid; the stay may be provided with a recess in one edge to engage one of the bearing members to hold the lid open. The stay is shaped so that the tension of the spring is reduced in the final closing of the lid, to ensure complete closing. The bearing members may be pins, and one of them may be the pivot of the rocking member ; the pins may be provided with antifriction rollers, or with pads having sliding engagement with the stay. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the bearing members 13, 17 are formed of pins carrying rollers, and the member 13 acts as a pivot for a crank 15 formed of two similar parts of sheet metal between which are the stay 4 and the rollers on the bearing members. The free ends of the crank parts are brought together for attachment to a spring 19, the other end of which is anchored to a plate carrying the pin 13, The stay 4, pivoted to the lid at 5, has a recess 9 which engages with the member 13 to hold the lid open until sufficient pressure is applied to force the stay away from the member 13 against the pressure of the spring 19. The lower edge of the stay is cut away at 11 to reduce the spring pressure when the lid is nearly closed. The other edge of the stay is shaped near the tip so that the spring pressure is reduced when the member 13 leaves the recess 9 but is increased immediately afterwards to check the fall of the lid. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement in which the rollers of the bearing members are replaced by pads 24, 23 pivoted on the pins and having sliding engagement with the stay.
