[Class 17 (iii).] Apparatus for measuring feet for the purpose of constructing lasts comprises a series of adjustable supports 4, Fig. 1, registrable as to height and arranged to support a pliable base 30 surmounted by a pliable plate 43 adaptable to the foot. A sheet of paper 65, Fig. 14, is placed between the plate and base for recording purposes. Various graduated tapes 62 and a vertical support 60 are used to take girths and heights. A special toe-piece 59, Fig. 12, is used for the forward end of the foot. The supports 4, one at the heel and two at the instep, are mounted in a box 1 and are operated by bevel gears 8, Fig. 2, and rods 7 connected to controlling knobs 6, 20. At the same time, pinions 9 and chains 10 operate graduated drums 11 which indicate numbers at windows 12 to correspond with the respective heights of the supports 4. Inside the supports 4 are rods 13, Fig. 2, with heads 14 resting in ledges in the supports. Grooves 13a in the rods 13 accommodate, for the rear rod, an arm 15, Fig. 4, and for the other rods, a cross bar 16. The arm 15 is linked at 17 to the centre of the bar 16. The bar 16 carries a nut 18 carrying a screw 19 supported in the box 1. When a knob 20 is turned, the screw will cause the nut 18 to advance or retreat and consequently the bar 16 and arm 15, causing all the rods 13 to turn on their axes. The rods 13 have heads 14, Fig. 6, with bosses 22 on which rest other bosses 23 connected to a plate 43. The screw 19, Fig. 5, carries a cam 25 operating a follower 26, while a wheel 27, Fig. 2, turns a graduated wheel 29 by a chain 28. The supports 4 carry a deformable base 30, Fig. 9, consisting of parts connectedby rivets 37. Above the base 30 is the plate 43 fixed at one end by screws and at the other end on the member 26 by lugs and a pivot 45, Fig. 2. In a state of rest, the bosses 22, 23 are in contact allowing a sheet of slotted paper 65, Fig. 14, to be introduced between the base 30 and plate 43 for the marking out of the contour of the foot by spikes 45a, Fig. 11, on graduated tapes 46 slidable in straps 47 solid with the plate 43. The tapes are fixed to the centre of the plate by coil springs 48. The tapes are buckled at 49, Fig. 1. The toe part of the device consists of a member 52, Fig. 12, sliding on the plate 43 and provided with a pad 53 guided by a strap 47 and retracted by a spring. The member 52 is provided on each side with pads 55 graduated and sliding in slots 56 in side pieces 57. Toe and heel spikes 58 perforate the paper when the knob 20 is turned. The height of the shoe or boot upper is measured by a graduated scale 60.
