Boots and shoes, measuring for.-A device for taking the measurement from the back of the heel to the ball of the foot and the girth of the foot at the ball joint in fitting shoes or in making lasts comprises a base with a heel abutment, a gauge freely slidable by hand along the base, and a flexible measure combined with the gauge and anchored at one end to the base to adjust or compensate automatically the girth measurements in accordance with the variation in lengths. As shown, the device comprises a base 1 having a metal guide strip for a carriage carrying gauze members 5<a>, 6a, which are independently laterally adjustable, on the carriage to the width of the foot. The carriage also has a pointer 23 which projects upwards through a slot in a cover plate 8 and by a knob on which it may be moved to bring notches 5<b>, 6<b> on the carriage in line with the ball of the foot, when the length may be read by a pointer 23b on a scale 24. A tape 17, having markings 21 thereon in accordance with various fittings, passes through one of a pair of horizontally arranged guides on the inside of the gauge 6<a>, and thence under the cover 8 to the front end of the base where it is anchored at 18. Another tape 16 having a mark 22 to read against the tape 17 is fixed to the carriage on the underside of the cover 8, and passes through one guide 12 of a pair of guides 12, 13 on the inside of the gauge member 5<a>, the tapes passing across the foot at the desired angle. By changing the relative positions of the tapes 16, 17 in the guides the device can be used for both right and left feet. A plate 27 is provided as a sole rest.
