Boots, shoes, and lasts, measuring and fitting for.-The device comprises a foot-rest, which may be placed upon or secured to a suitable footstool and on which the foot &c. to be measured is placed with the central line through the heel and the middle of the width at the instep arch arranged centrally. A record sheet is placed in a depression on the foot-rest shaped to receive it and the. heel is arranged centrally by means of parallel lines 1 - - 4 and circular lines 9. The front of the foot is then moved to bring the middle of the width at the instep arch centrally, e.g. by a sighting scale 47 mounted to slide vertically in a member 46 which can slide horizontally in a slotted member 10 which in turn can be swung about a bearing 48 as pivot and which is secured in the position shown, to locate properly the foot by the engagement of a spring-pressed ball 49 in a recess, and which can also be moved to bring the lower end of the scale into contact with any desired point of the foot to obtain its height above the footrest. The ball 49 may also hold the member 10 aside when it is required to make measurements of the foot &c. Contact members 11, 12, 20, adjustable laterally and longitudinally of the foot-rest, are provided to take measurements on the outside of the foot, in the plane of the record sheet, of the length of the foot up to the waist, of the position of the metatarsal joint of the fifth phalanx, and of the overall length of the foot, respectively. These members also help to fix the foot in position on the foot-rest. If desired, the outline of the foot may be obtained in duplicate &c. by tracing round the foot with a pencil, and measurements may be taken from the outline. The member 20, by means of two pointers 22, 23, reading against a fixed scale 25, indicates, by the respective pointers, the size of women's and girls' and of men's and boys' shoes. A movable scale 26, bearing markings corresponding to the circumferential measurement of the foot across the tread and obtained by a tape measure, is set off against the length measurement, and, by means of a fixed arrow 27 against markings A-F on the scale 26, an indication is obtained of the correct fitting. Other contact members 28, 29. 30 slidable along a guide 3 at the inner side of the foot are provided. The member 28 carries two pointers 33, 34 reading, respectively, against a lateral scale 35 and longitudinal scale 36 related to the length measurement obtained by the members 20 and to which it is set. The member 28 is then moved in to contact with the centre of the side of the heel. The member 30 is similar and the readings on the scales 35 and 39 are noted and added. The contact member 29 is adjusted to the ball-joint and has an additional slider on it, the pointer of which is set to the sum noted above, and by means of a pointer 44 and scale 45 graduated to suit the manufacturer's requirements, an indication of the type of shoe required is obtained. The record sheet may have a length measurement scale printed on it and may be ruled for the entering up of a complete record of the data obtained. Specifications 3499/14 and 201,843 are referred to.
