[Class 17 (iii).] Trees and stretchers.-For smoothing out creases between the toe ar d instep portions of the upper, a flexible strap damps this portion of the upper against a stretcher within the shoe. A sole supporting baseplate 1 is slotted to guide a U-piece 11, which may be depressed away from the shoe by eccentrics 14 turned by a handle 15. The ends of the U-piece are connected by links to a pressing device comprising a series of blocks 4 threaded on springs 5, a strip of vulcanized fibre being secured to the blocks between them and the upper. The eccentrics bear on a thrust plate 17 formed with steps and adjustable for size of shoe, a spring plunger 19 retaining the plate in adjusted position. A stretcher 3 is placed inside the shoe. The heel portion of the stretcher is formed with a recess 27 engaged by a head 26 on a bar 24 slidable through a cross bar 24 connected by a yoke 22 with a disc 29 engaging a slot in the baseplate. A spring is threaded on the bar 24, and the disc 29 has a stop to determine the normal position of the yoke. In a modification, a double row of blocks 4 are arranged in staggered formation. According to the Provisional Specification, a sheet of material impregnated with oil, fat, or wax may be interposed between the upper and the strap ; the strap may be adjustable ; and a toe strap may be provided.
