Abstract

Materials containing zinc oxide are mixed with sulphuric acid and/or a sulphate such as ferrous sulphate, the mixture if necessary dried and comminuted, and then heated to 650-750 DEG C., say to 700-720 DEG C., the zinc sulphate formed being recovered by leaching. Lead if present is also converted to sulphate but remains with the residue, whilst the ferric oxide recovered when p using ferrous sulphate may be used as a pigment. Impurities such as manganese, copper, cobalt, nickel, and silver remain in the residue as oxides.
