[Class 60.] A machine for buffing and polishing spoons, forks, &c. consists of a frame 10 upon which is a slide 11 carrying an adjustable work holder 13, and a polishing-tool 14 carried by a shaft 15 mounted in an arm 16 adapted to be rocked about bearings 17 coaxial with a shaft which drives, by means of a belt, the shaft 15. In the frame is mounted a shaft 23 carrying a cam drum 26 having therein a cam groove 28, or carrying a rib or ribs, engaged by a roller or stud 27 on the slide 11, whereby the slide is reciprocated at a speed which varies so that the tool 14 at all times has the same speed relative to the article being treated. The shaft 23 also carries a cam 29, which, through a lever 32, lifts a screw 30 adjustable in the arm 16 so that the polishing tool rises or falls to remain in contact with the surface of the work as this is reciprocated beneath the tool. In a modification, Fig. 4, the slide 11 carries a transversely movable slide 35 on which the work-holder 13 is mounted, the slide 35 being reciprocated at variable speed in each stroke by a cam 37 acting on an arm 38 connected to the slide by a link 41 ; the slide 35 may be arranged to make several reciprocations during one reciprocation of the slide 11, and the tool is lifted and lowered, to conform with the shape of the article, by a cam 29. The stroke of the slide 35 may be varied as different portions of the work are brought beneath the tool by the movement of the slide 11. The parts 11 .. 15 and 35 may be duplicated on the other side of the frame 10, each set of parts treating one half of the work. The arm 16 may be weighted or pressed down by a spring. The machine may be driven electrically.
