Cutting-edges, shaping and treating. - Table knife blades &c. are ground, glazed, or buffed by a wheel t mounted on a headstock p pivoted at p<1> in bearing-pieces on a frame a, the inclination of the spindle of the wheel being adjustable by screws u. In the frame a of the machine is a shaft b carrying a slidable friction clutch member c which may be moved, by rods g, h and levers connected thereto, into engagement with either of two oppositely rotating pulleys d, e mounted loosely on the shaft. The shaft drives by a belt 10 another shaft 9 on which is a cam 13 engaging one end of a lever 14, the other end of the lever being slotted at 16 to engage a pin on a vertically-movable rod 18, to the top of which is pivoted a slotted guide 21, the angular position of which is adjusted by screws 23. The work is mounted on a table 6 on a slide 2, which is reciprocated by the engagement of a nut thereon with a screwed part of the shaft b; the rods g, h may be operated by hand or by a lever 3<a> carried by the slide 2, whereby the slide is reciprocated automatically. The table 6 is pivoted at 7 to the slide and carries a pin 25 which engages in the slot in the guide 21, and by the vertical reciprocations of this causes oscillation of the table on its pivots, whereby a convex surface is produced on the knife blade.
