Abstract

374,577. Pasteurizing milk &c. HYDE, G. W., 1, Grey Street, Ardwick, Manchester. April 23, 1931, No. 12014. [Class 49.] Liquids such as milk, cider, wine, vinegar or food extracts are pasteurized by passage through a coil consisting of a section c of relatively small bore, e.g. # inch, in which the liquid is raised to pasteurization temperature followed by a section d of larger bore, e.g. 2 inch, in which the liquid is maintained at said temperature to complete the pasteurization. The coil may be made of or lined with silver or other metal resistant to chemical action by the liquid and may be immersed in a tank containing a liquid such as water, oil or glycerine which is heated by immersion heaters &c. disposed in the upper portion of the tank adjacent to the section c of the coil. Alternatively only the section c may be heated to the pasteurizing temperature, the section d being covered with heat-insulating material. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a heat exchanger in which the hot liquid leaving the pasteurizer heats the cold liquid entering, and of thermostatically controlled means for switching on and off the electric heater for the pasteurizer.
