Abstract

374,564. Television. BAIRD, J. L. and BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., 133, Long Acre, London. April 9, 1931, No. 10487. [Class 40 (iii).] A scanning device comprises a plurality of fixed reflectors 8, 9, 10, Fig. 1, and a cooperating rotating reflector 5 whose surface is inclined to the axis of rotation 6. The reflector 5 may be replaced by a plurality of reflectors, each equally inclined to its neighbours and the axis of rotation. Light from a source 1 is directed to the rotating reflector 5 and moves across reflectors 8, 9, 10, to trace adjacent contiguous, discontiguous or overlapping lines on the screen 11. Further fixed reflectors may be placed round the shaft 6 so that the screen is scanned in overlapping or adjacent areas in horizontal and vertical lines and in opposite senses. Reflectors 12 .. 19, Fig. 2, may be used to give radial scanning lines EDC. In this case the translucency of the screen 11 may vary to compensate for uneven illumination or the coefficient of reflection may vary across the surface of the reflectors 12 .. 19. At the transmitter this compensation is unnecessary. The aperture 3 is preferably circular in this modification. In Fig. 3, each fixed reflector 21 corresponds to an elemental area of the screen 11. The mirrors 21 may be arranged so that the elemental areas, which may overlap, are illuminated in a non-sequential order. The mirror system 20 may rotate while the mirror 5 remains stationary. For flood-light scanning the source 1 is replaced by a light-sensitive cell. Several zones may be scanned by multiplication of the apparatus. According to the Provisional Specification, the mirror 5, Fig. 1, may be replaced by a mirror drum in which the mirrors are progressively canted. Where the fixed reflectors 8, 9, 10 are continued round the shaft 6, each mirror may co-operate with an inverting prism. Lenses may replace the mirrors. Specifications 222,604, 326,230, [both in Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric], and 348,211 are referred to.
