Abstract
374,242. Emergency exits and steps for vehicles. HURST, NELSON, & CO., Ltd. and INGRAM, J., of Glasgow Rolling Stock & Plant Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. May 21, 1931, No. 14990. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i).] In an emergency exit for the passengers on the upper deck of a vehicle, the door or closure for the exit or one portion of such closure is linked with the body so that it may be dropped bodily with a substantially parallel movement so as to bring the lower end of a ladder mounted on the outer face of the closure to a position within easy access of the ground. In the construction shown the closure comprises a lower section 2 that carries a ladder 4 and is connected to the vehicle body by pairs of pivoted links 5, 6, and an upper section 3 that is hinged about its upper horizontal edge 11 so as to open outwardly, the two sections being interconnected to move simultaneously by means of chain and sprocket gearing 15, 12, and the upper sprocket wheel 12 being formed integral with a spur-wheel 13 meshing with a toothed segment 14 on the section 3. When the section 2 is released and dropped its weight is counterbalanced partly by the raising of the section 3 and partly by spring plungers 8, 9, dashpots or the like disposed between the links 5 and fixed points 7 on the inside of the section 2. In order to lock the sections in their closed position the section 2 is fitted with a rotatable member 17, which has an integral tongue 18 adapted to engage a lug 19 on the section 3 and also operates two bolts 20, 21 engaging the door or closure posts, the member 17 being operated either directly by a handle 22 on the interior of the vehicle or through the intermediary of links and levers 25 .. 30 by a handle 23 accessible to the driver. In a modification, the closure comprises one section only mounted on the vehicle by links 5, 6 in a similar manner to the section 2 in the arrangement previously described.
