[Classes 20 (ii), 20 (iv), and 87 (i).] A structural member for a ceiling, floor, wall, roof, or like part of a building comprises parallel longitudinal girders separated from each other by stiffeners which are formed with means for holding in position one or more layers of the ceiling or other part of the building. Fig. 1 shows two adjacent floor members differently constituted. Girders a are connected by stiffening webs b provided with wires o which are secured to the layers m by being passed through slots in the layers and being then bent over. Alternatively, they may engage longitudinal ribs l provided on the layers, as indicated in Fig. 3. The webs may also be provided on their upper and lower edges with lugs and recessed portions for engagement with the layers. Instead of being arranged vertically, the webs may be arranged on horizontal planes. The layers consist of hard fireproof insulating material, such as compound straw, corrugated thick or tarred paper, pumice, fibrous artificial boards, peat, wire or wood lathwork, carrying mortar or cement. The girders may be riveted or welded to the webs b or they may be formed with slots d for engagement by lugs on the webs, the lugs being bent over on the outside of the girders. Alternative sections for the girders a are shown in Fig. 2a. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the girders are connected by a box-like frame containing the layers n and stiffening webs b. Adjacent members are secured together by clamps f, Fig. 3, forced over adjacent flanges of contiguous girders, or by means of tongues on one girder passing through slots in the adjacent girder and being bent over. The two girders form a compartment adapted to contain reinforced concrete.
