Ironwork, constructional. - The beams and columns forming the skeleton of a building are made of sheet metal with hollow flattened flanges, and are connected together by brackets 34, 35, 39, 40, Fig. 6, inserted through slots in the edges of the flanges of one member and into the hollow flange of the adjacent member, or by wires 36, Fig. 7. Beams in the same plane are connected as shown in Fig. 3, by severing the ends of the flanges from the web of beam 70, flattening the severed ends, and inserting them into slots in the edges of the flanges of beam 69. A third girder 71 is bevelled at the flanges and similarly connected. The joints so made are further secured by wires 37, 41, Fig. 4. The walls, floors, and roof are completed by horizontal and vertical tie-rods 14, 15, 16, and concrete 21, 24 cast in situ with temporary shuttering or applied to strips 18 of corrugated cardboard, reeds, or wood wool. The spaces 25 may be left empty or be filled with slag, peat, or the like. The columns are anchored to the concrete plinth 7 by plates 9 formed with lugs turned up to fit the hollow flanges and other lugs to key with the concrete.
