Abstract

373,761. Yielding bearing supports. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. and DOUGHTY, E. H., Cheston Road, Aston, Birmingham. May 7, 1931, No. 13475. [Class 12 (i).] A bearing assembly includes one or m o r e cushioning rings or pads of rubber or like resilient material interposed between a race ring and a part upon which the latter is mounted, and interfitting parts concentric with, and slidable relatively in the direction of, the axis of the bearing, at least one of the circumferential contacting surfaces of the interfitting parts being convexly curved so that the bearing is capable of an oscillating and axial yielding. As shown for a conical roller footstep bearing the bearing housing 24, Fig. 4, has an annular recess containing a rubber ring 17 and receiving an annular projection 31 on a support 26 the circumferential faces of the projection 31 being convexly curved. Alternatively the perimeter of the housing 24 may be convexly curved and the housing may rest on a rubber ring in the bottom of a recess in the support 26. An arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 4 may be used for a horizontal shaft bearing the parts 24, 31, being interconnected by bolts passing through clearance holes in one of the parts. In a modification a bearing housing 24, Fig. 7, has at one end a channel 37 containing a rubber ring 17 and a member 42 containing a ring 17 at the other end. The member 42 is adjusted by screws 41 so that the rings 17 tightly grip an annular support 34. Convexly curved surfaces are provided on one or both parts 24, 34. In the case of a bogie pivot mounting of a railway vehicle the vehicle frame is supported on the bogie by a taper roller bearing. The race rings 2, 3, Fig. 1, are held together by a ring 7 having an edge 8 bent over the ring 3. The latter is carried in an annular chamber 10 of a baseplate 9 mounted on the bogie and the ring 2 bears on a rubber ring 17 in an annular chamber of a plate 15 carried by the vehicle frame. The plate 15 has flanges 13, 14, which telescope into flanges 11, 12.on the baseplate 9, the outer wall 19 of the flange 13 being curved. Instead of taper rollers, spherical rollers, balls, or plain bearing rings; may be used.
