Abstract

372,910. Lubricating connecting-rods. LEWIS, E. C., 15, Morningside, Dalton Road, Coventry, and KNIGHT, K. A., The Chestnuts, Meriden, Warwickshire. April 14, 1931, Nos. 10920 and 23040. [Class 12 (ii).] A ball-and-socket joint is arranged between a piston and a connecting-rod so as to permit relative transverse movement between them in a direction parallel with the axis of the crank shaft. The piston b, Fig. 1, has a central pillar b<1> to which is secured a socket c housing a ball d on the rod a. The socket comprises upper and lower sections, the lower section being in halves c<1>. The upper section has a lubricating cavity c<3> opposite an oil channel through the ball. In a preferred construction, Fig. 2, play is provided between the ball on the end of the rod and the end of the rod. The rod has a flat head a<1>, the upper and lower surfaces of which are engaged by the ball which is divided into parts d, d<1>. The part d has an oil duct d<4> connecting a conduit in the rod with a cavity in the socket.
