Abstract
230,337. Ostberg, K. G. May 13, 1924, [Convention date]. Driving-gear.-A balanced arrangement of reciprocating engines .driving through gearing a common shaft 1, and designed to eliminate lateral pressures between pistons and cylinders, comprises two groups of six cylinders mounted with their axes parallel to the shaft 1 on opposite sides of a casing 4 which has a central bearer 6 housing six crank discs 23 fitted with crank-pine 30 and external teeth meshing with a gear-wheel 28 on the shaft 1. Each piston actuates two adjacent crank-pins through two connecting-rods 31, 32, which rods are pivotally connected to the pistons at the points 20, 21, 22. Fig. 11 shows a pivotal connection for the rods 31, 32, the piston 40 having a tubular extension 39 housing a collar 38 having lugs journalling the gudgeon pin 33. A split resilient ring 41 retains the collar in the piston as shown. Figs. u and 6 show the link piece 42 for connecting each end of a crank-pin 30 with a connecting-rod, two pieces 42 being provided at each end. Each piece 42 has a segmental bearing segment 43 embracing a portion of the pin, and is supported in annular grooves 44, 45. It is bored at right angles to the crankpin to receive the pin 36 of the connecting-rod. In an internal-combustion engine, the main shaft 1 may act as the control shaft, the gear ratio being selected for that purpose.
