Abstract

372,408. Moistening and otherwise treating charge. RICHARDSON, F. H., Stock bridge House, Ulverston, Lancashire. Sept. 16, 1931, No. 37847/30. [Class 7 (ii).] Water or heavy oil, or both, may be added to the mixture supplied by a carburetter 1, Fig. 1, the additional liquids discharging into a flange-shaped fitting 6, located between the carburetter and engine ; the fitting 6 may be adjusted transversely by means of a set-screw. The auxiliary charge is drawn through a device 28 which causes the liquid to flow intermittently in the form of separate drops ; two spaced prongs 28a, 28b are caused to nip between them a, flexible portion of the supply pipe, the amount of the restriction depending on the adjustment of a screw 29 ; the two spaced restrictions divide the liquid into globules 32 which pass through a glass tube 31. A manually adjustable screw and abutment 34 acting on a further flexible portion of tube may also regulate the flow of the auxiliary liquid. A similar method of control may also be actuated conjointly with the throttle valve 2 ; an adjustable rod 21 is rotated with the throttle spindle and operates through the threaded upper end of the rod a member which acts in the same manner as the screw 29. The auxiliary liquids may fall on to a grid 37, Fig. 3, in an inserted chamber 7 or they may be supplied to a nozzle 39 in the throat of a Venturi, as shown in Fig. 5, to facilitate mixing with the carburetter charge ; a regulating screw 40 is provided in the latter arrangement. Fig. 9 shows a further construction for distributing the auxiliary liquid wherein the supply pipe 10d enters a channel 7a formed in the wall of the induction chamber 7. A regulating screw 12, Fig. 7, may be provided near the discharge end of the supply pipe 10, the final portion of which is carried to a lower level than the mixture passage 7 to form a sump 10b. When a second auxiliary liquid is supplied it is controlled between the source and outlet in a manner similar to that described. The supply tank or tanks may be located below the level of the induction manifold. Additional air may be admitted near the discharge end of the pipe 10.
