Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts.] [Class 138 (i).] In apparatus for cleaning rugs, carpets, and other fabrics, particularly those of a heavy character, reciprocating heaters strike the fabric while being resiliently supported in a region subject to suction. After beating, the fabric is brushed, suction again being employed. As shown, the carpet or the like 1 passes in the direction of the arrow between feed rollers 3 to a position for being acted on by spring-pressed beaters 29 reciprocated through the action of cams 33. There are a series of beaters arranged across the carpet and operated on by cams out of phase with one another, each beater having pairs of rods 27 connected to a crosshead provided with a cam roller 34. Beneath the carpet and supporting it is a series of coiled springs 42, one for each beater, the spring supports being in turn supported by a spring-pressed holder 43. At each stroke of the beaters, the carpet alternately assumes a concave and convex shape, the loosened dirt being removed by a channel 5 leading to a suction apparatus 36. After beating, the carpet is subjected to the action of rotary brushes 6 travelling at greater speed than the carpet, the dust being removed by passages 76, 77 leading to the suction apparatus. A lever on the shaft 50 serves to raise slides 16 and maintain them in a raised position while the carpet is being inserted.
