Abstract
371,269. Spiral springs. BROEK, J. A. VAN DEN, 715, South Forest, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.A. Sept. 7, 1931, No. 25036. [Class 108 (iii).] A flat spiral spring is coiled in such a way as to avoid the tendency of the coils to make contact at one side, the outer end being guided so that it is always tangential or at right-angles to a radius to the centre and is also free to adjust itself in the direction of the radius. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the outer end A is fixed to a bar B which bears upon pins C, D and is free to move endwise. When this spring is tensioned by rotating its inner end, the outer end may move closer to the centre but cannot move in any other way. The outer ends of the two opposed springs shown in Fig. 2 are rigidly connected to a bar B. When the springs are wound up at their centres, the bar moves parallel to itself towards the centre. In a modification two springs with coaxial centres have their outer ends connected.
