Abstract

Natural or artificial cellulosic filaments, bands, tubes, films, and the like are matted and rendered opaque by treatment with a dilute aqueous solution of colloidal titanium hydroxide containing not more than 0,4 per cent of TiO2. The materials may be subsequently treated if desired, for example, by bleaching, calendering, shading off, dyeing, and so forth. The process of the invention may be applied to already dyed goods, or to artificial silks which have previously been submitted to partial matting by a different method. The matting effect is enhanced if the matted materials are afterwards treated with soaps, fatty acids, or salts or esters thereof, a hydrophobic effect being at the same time produced. In examples, (1) unbleached viscose silk is treated with a 0,003 per cent solution of colloidal titanium hydroxide, washed, bleached, soaped and dried; (2) freshly spun viscose is treated with a 0,005 per cent colloidal solution of titanium hydroxide, washed and treated as usual; (3) fabric woven from dyed Chardonnet silk is dipped into a 0,016 per cent colloidal solution of titanium hydroxide, rinsed in sodium sulphate solution, washed and dried; (4) viscose artificial straw is treated in a 0,3 per cent solution of colloidal titanium hydroxide, washed, soaped, washed and dried. Owing to the soaping, the capacity of the straw to be wetted is considerably decreased. Specification 343,121 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the application of the process to materials made from cellulose derivatives, such as esters and ethers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
