Abstract
371,037. Cellulose. DREYFUS, H., 22, Hanover Square, London. Nov. 8, 1930, No. 6306/32. Divided on 371,000. [Class 96.] In a process for producing cellulose or cellulosic materials by treating wood, straw, grasses and the like with hot alkaline liquors under pressure, the treatment is effected in the presence of one or more volatile aliphatic alcohols, which exert a pressure in the digester. Additional pressure may be produced by other means, e.g. by pumping inert gases or vapours into the digester, or by their development from materials introduced into the digester for that purpose. The pressures employed are higher than usual, e.g. 20-100 atmospheres, and the temperature is preferably 100-120‹ C. The alkali is preferably used in excess, e.g. 20-50 per cent excess of the theoretical quantity, and preferably in dilute solution, e.g. 2-4 per cent. In an example 100 parts of wood chips is subjected to vacuum and impregnated with 900-1200 parts of 4 per cent caustic soda. 10-35 parts ethyl or methyl alcohol is added, the digester closed, and nitrogen pumped in until the pressure is 20-25 atmospheres. After 1-2 hours the temperature is raised to 100- 120‹ C. and maintained at that temperature for 3-7 hours.
