[Class 94 (ii).] Envelopes 36 having their side flaps gummed and folded and their closing flaps creased but unfolded are fed from a table 37 by feed rolls 21, 22 against stops 10 on a table 4, the stops being so positioned that the closing flap just clears the nip of the rollers which thereby align the envelope against the stops. The stops 10 are adjustably mounted in slides 9 adapted to be reciprocated in guides 12 which are adjustable laterally of the machine along a cross-bar 3 secured to stanchions 2 on the main frame. The slides 9 are linked to arms 7 secured on a rock shaft 5 journalled in the stanchions 2 which also support a second rock shaft 6 carrying spaced fingers 35b projecting towards the roll 21, 22. As soon as the envelope is adjusted against the stops 10, the fingers 35b move downwards to wipe the closure flap against the roll 22 and fold it about its crease. The fingers then hold the envelope on the table 4 and prevent it buckling while the stops 10 move forward to thrust the fold of the closure flap between the roll 22 and an idler roll 25. The idler roll 25 is carried by curved arms 24 pivoted on a shaft 20 and rocked by a cam 30 engaging a cam roller 28 on an arm 27, to press the envelope during the passage of the closure flap only. Further folding pressure is applied by a resilient roll 23 comprising bristles, or having a cover of sponge or pneumatic rubber. As the envelope passes beneath the fingers 35b, it depresses a curved portion 40 of an arm 39 normally projecting through an aperture in the central finger 35b, and the arm 39 which forms part of an arm 38 secured to a shaft 37, rocks the shaft to actuate a counting mechanism.
