PARKS and WILLIAM BODGE, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of New York, county and State of New York, and Nutley, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to envelope making machines, the present invention being an improvement over that disclosed in Patent No. 1,316,737, issued to Frederick J. Parks, and being adapted for operation on the same type of envelope,-
which is commonly known as a pocket clasp envelope. The present invention has-more particular reference, at least as regards its specific details, to the mechanism for apply ing the gum to the flaps of the envelopes,
and it is to be understood that while this mechanism is designed more especially for use in connection with the manufacture of envelopes of the type above referred to, no particular limitation is placed on its use or application.
In the machine disclosed in the patent above referred to no means is provided for gumming or sealing the flap forming the outer wall of the pocket directly upon the main body of the envelope, this flap being held in place by the ends of the side flaps which are folded over the corners thereof and sealed thereto.
The present invention has for a general object to provide a means operating in connection with a machine of this type for sealing the said outer pocket flap directly to the. body of the envelope, and further, to couple up such means with the folding and side flap sealing devices to produce the finished envelope in one passage through the machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient compound gum applying device.
For further comprehension of the invention. and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the. appended claims in'which the vario'us novcl features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The machine in which the invention is here embodied is adapted to operate on a blank similar to that shown in the patent above referred to and to fold the same in like manner to form the pocket and clasp. The mechanism for-thus folding the blank comprises the series of rolls 10 and guides 11. and as these are constructed and operate as set forth in the said patent no detail reference to the same is needed.
' The blank upon issuing from this part of the machine is in the form shown in Fig. 8, with the double pocket forming flap indicated generally at a folded on the main body indicated at d, of the blank and the clasp, indicated at c engaging therein, while the 'side flaps f remain unfolded. The subsequent operations of the machine upon the blank are briefly as follows: The pocket flap 0 and clasp e are firstthrown back or opened, the gum is applied to the ends of the thrown back pocket flap and the adjacent marginal portion of the body of the envelope, and also to the side flaps f. The pocket flap and clasp are then re-folded and the side flaps folded over on the body of the envelope and on the end portions of the folded pocket flap.
The folded blank on issuing from the last of the rollers 10 passes down an inclined guide 12 adjacent to which area pair of fingers 13 fixed on a rock shaft 14: suitably journaled in the side frames 15 of the machine. These fingers 13 are adapted. for operation by a timed cam device, to be presently further described, so as to engage the free end of the pocket flap and clasp, which occupy the general positions shown in Fig. 8, and at d in Fig. 1 when they issue from the rol 10, and straighten thesame out, to the position shown in Fig. 9. The blank then immediately enters under another guide 16 whereby the flap and clasp are retained in their straightened position.
These g'uides'12 and16 direct the blank between a pair of drums endless belts 18 which'pass partially around the latter. These belts 18 are also passed around the pulleys, 19,- 20, 21 and 22. Of these, the pulleys 19 are located directly above the drums 17 and the belts 18 pass under the same and over the latter, receiving 17, and a pair of the blank at this point. The pulleys 21 and 22 are located in a common horizontal plane at a-distance below the drums, while the pulleys 20 are on approximately the level of the pulleys 19, and may be adjustable to properly tension the belts 18. The pulleys 19, 21 and 22 may be mounted on counter-shafts 19, 21 and 22 suitably journaled in the side frames, while the pulleys20 are idlers and may be mounted on arms 23 fixed to circular bars 23 extending between the frames.
The blank, as it is' conveyed partially around the drums 17 by the belts 18, is adapted to have the gum applied thereto, the gum applying means being as follows: A pair of cradle frames 24 are fixed at their upper ends to a shaft 25 journaled in the side frames 15, these cradle frames bein located adjacent the said side frames. ournaled in the lower ends of these cradle frames is a shaft 26 upon which are mounted the gumming rollers 27 for the side flaps' and a pair of transfer rollers 28 for the pocket flaps gumming means, these transfer rollers 28 engaging a pair of gumming rollers 29 by'which the gum for sealing the pocket flap is applied. The gumming rollers 27 are adapted to be moved bodily toward and away from the drums 17, while the rollers 29 have a like bodily movement but "independent of the rollers 27 as will ently setforth. v
The gumming rollers 27 and transfer rollers 28 dip into a fountain which comprises a troughlike box 30. To facilitate access to the fountain the latter is preferably mounted in a manner to permit of vertical adjustment and also complete removal when desired, As here shown the fountain 30 rests loosely on a table 31, being held against lat eral displacement by angular lugs 32 on the latter which enclose the corners of the fountain. This table 31 is fixed on the upper ends of a pair of posts 33 slidable in guides 34 on the side frames 15 and having their lower ends connected by short link-bars 35 with arms 36 fixed on a rock-shaft 37 carried by theframes 15. Upon one end of this rock-shaft is fixed a handle 38 provided with a hollow boss 39 in which is slidably held a spring-pressed pin 40 which rests at one end upon a suitable part of the adjacent side lframe 15 and holds the fountain in raised position, this pin 40 having a knob 41 at its opposite end whereby it may be grasped for Withdrawal from the frame 15 when the fountain is to be lowered.
The shaft 26, on which the gumming rollers 27 and transfer rollers 28 are fixed, is driven from a gear 45 loose on the shaft 25 and receiving motion from any suitable train of gears, this gear 45 meshing with an idler 46 suitably j'ournaled in one of the frames 24, this idler meshing in turn with a third gear 47 fixed on the shaft 26. It willbe apparent that shaft 26 may be swung bodily to move the gumming rollers into or out of operative position without affecting its operative connection to the shaft 25.
Referring now to the pocket flap gumming rollers 29, these are fixed on a horizontal shaft 48 which is j'ournaled at its ends in thelegs 49" of a yoke 4 9,-this yoke being supported by and :above'the shaft 26, the lower ends of the legs 49 of the yoke being pivotally mounted on the shaft 26. In order to provide for adjustment of the transfer rollers 28 and gumming rollers 29 with relation to one another, the yoke 49 is preferably mounted as follows: Formed in each leg of the yoke is a slotted guide box 50 whose lower end is closed by a fixed cap 51. This box 50 engages slidably on a bearing 52 having a sleeve like projection 53 from one face thereof which is freely supported in the lower end of the cradle arm 24, the end of shaft 26 passing through this bearbe presing 52 and sleeve extension 53 whereby this shaft is journaled in the said cradle arms.
Projecting fixedly downwardly from the cap 51 is a coiled expansion spring 57 which surrounds the screw 55 and bears upwardly on the bearing 52. 5
As will be apparent, the cap 51, which forms a part of yoke 49, rests on thescrew 55 and in consequence the yoke 49 is supported from the shaft 26, while by adjusting the nuts 56 the position of the yoke with respect to the shaft 26 maybe varied, with a consequent relative adjustment of the.
transfer rollers 28 and gumming rollers 29.
The rollers 29 are rotated from shaft 26 by the series of gears indicated at 57.
To move the gumming rollers 27 into and out of operative position a pair of links 60 are connected at one end to the cradle arms 24 and at opposite ends to a pair of lever arms such as 61 fixed on a rock-shaft 61',
one of these lever arms having an extension 61 which is engaged by a cam 62 on a cam shaft 63, the cam acting to move'the gumming rollers out of operative position and a sprin 64 acting to move the gumming rollers into operative position.

To rock the shaft 66'an arm 69 is fixed therespring'74 being adjustably limited by means of a set screw threaded through an offset 69 from the arm 69 and bearing on a lug '76 or other projection on the side frame 15. To facilitate accurate adjustment'of the arm 65 it may be held in adjusted position by the opposed screws 77 threaded through ears 65 on the arm and bearing on opposite sides of a finger'78 which projects between said ears from a collar 79 fixed to shaft 66.
The blank with the gum applied thereto is .carried downwardly and under the pulleys 21, a curved guide 80 extendingfrom the drum 17 and partially under the pulleys 21 to direct the blank under the latter. The pulleys 21 and 22 are located above other pulleys or rollers 81 and 82 which co-operate therewith in advancing the blank, a suitable guide plate 83 extending between the bights of these pairs of pulleys.
A short distance in front of the pulleys and rollers 22 and 82 are located other sets of rollers 84, 85 between which the blank passes to the folders 86 for folding down the side flaps, these folders being of ordinary construction and operating in conjunction with the usual additional rollers for sealing the side flap fr .Between the rollers 82 and 85a suitable guide plate 87 extends, and above this guide plate is provided a device for refolding the pocket flap and clasp upon the main body of the envelope. This device as here shown comprises a transverse bar 90 fixed at its ends to the side frames 15 in any suitable manner. Upon this bar are adjustably carried a pair of brackets 91 to the lower ends of which are fastened the angular guide members 92, which may each be secured in place by a screw 93, passing through aslot 94 in the horizontal arm of the guide member and threaded into the foot of thebracket 91. Upon the upright arm 92' of each guide member is secured for vertical adjustment an angle piece 95 against which the forward end of the blank strikes. This angle piece 95 is here shown as secured in place by a screw 96 passing freely therethrough and through a vertical .slot 97 in the arm 92 and threaded into a block 98 on the opposite face of said arm. The bracket 91.may be adjustably secured on the bar 90 by means of a screw99 taking through a clamp plate 100 into a lateral projection91 on the bracket which rests on the top edge'of the bar. Provision is thus made for adjustment of the guide members 92 either longitudinally or transversely of the machine as may be desirable, and for vertical adjustment of the angle pieces 95. The guide members 92 are spaced a suitable distance above the guide plate 87 to direct the blank with the folded fiapbetween the rollers 84 and 85.- To ensure of the pocket flap 0 being thrown up 'sufliciently' to engage the guide member 95 I provide on the guide plate 87 a pair of flat springs in position to be engaged by i said pocket flap just after 'it emerges from between the rollers 82 and pulleys 22, these springs being secured at-one end only to the guide plate and being. bowed upwardly at their centres as shown. To] obviate any chance ofthe clasp C being thrown backward and thus out ofthe pocket in the envelope while the refolding takes place I mountin any suitable manner a small idler roller 106 between the pulleys 22, which roller rides on said clasp and by its frictional engagement therewith prevents its displacement during the re-folding operationl The rollers 81 and 82 are arranged to be .resiliently pressed toward the pulleys 21 fixed to the side frame 15. A coiled expansion spring 113 is seated in a socket 114: in each standard and presses the bearing 111 upwardly against the conical end of a screw 115 threaded horizontally through the standard 112, the top of the bearing having at a one side a groove complementary to the conical end of the screw. By adjusting the screw a very fine adjustment of the roller is obtained.
In connection with the gumming rollers 27 and transfer rollers 28 I provide a pair of scrapers comprising angle pieces 116 fixed. to collars 117 on a transverse rod 118 rigidly connecting the cradle arms 24, these scrapers being slotted as shown at 119 so as to straddle the rollers.
' As previously stated, the pocket flap 0 is unfolded by means of a pair of fingers 13 which are operated by cam means synchronizing with the cams 62 and 72 which operate the gumming rollers. This means comprises a cam 120 on the cam shaft 73 which operates a lever 121 fulcrumed loosely on shaft 71' and connected by a link 122 with an arm 123 fixed on the rock shaft 1 1, the cam 120 acting to move the fingers upward, a coiled spring 124 moving them downward to open out the pocket flap.
The blanks are preferably fed to the initial ones of the folding rollers 10 by means which synchronizes with the above means, so that when the blank is fed to the rollers by this feeding means it will. emerge from the last of the rollers 10 at the right time to have the pocket flap engaged by the fingers 13. This blank feeding means may comprise a table 130 on which the blank is laid, this table having a longitudinal slot 131 formed therein in which a hooked finger 132 travels, thisfinger being mounted on a reciprocable bar 133 slidably supported under the table 130. This bar 133 is operated by a cam 135 fixed to the cam shaft 63 and engaging a lever 136 fulcrumed loosely on shaft 61 and connected by a link 137 with a. bell crank element 138, connected in turn by a short link 139 with the bar 133, the cam 135 acting to move the finger 132 backward while a coiled spring 140 moves the same forward. The various lever members which are engaged by the cams 62, 72. 120 and 135 may have antifriction rollers 1 12 thereon which roll on the peripheries of the cams.
It is not deemed essential to show the various gear or other drive connections for-driving the different members at the proper relative speeds since the same would be readily supplied by anyone skilled in the art.
In the operation of the machine as here embodied the blank is placed by hand on the table 130, with its rear end engaged by the finger 132, when the bar 133 has been moved to its rearmost position by the cam 135. As the cam rotates, the spring 1 10 moves the bar 133 forward, feeding the blank to the folding rollers 10, from the last of which it emerges, folded as in Fig. 8. The fingers 13 are moved downward. at this time by spring 124 and engage the pocket flap c and open or straighten it out, the opened flap immediately ntering under the guide 16.
The blank with the opened pocket flap is then caught between the belts 18 and drums 17 and carried partially around the latter to receive the gum. The gumming rollers 27, which are moved away from the drums 17 between envelopes by cam 62 acting through parts 61, 61 and 60, are moved forward by spring 64 to contact with the side flaps f. The gumming rollers 29, which are moved away from the drums by cams 72 acting through parts 71 71, 70, 69 and 65, are moved by spring. 74 against the blank, applyingthe gum to the ends of the pocket flap and the adjacent portions of the back of the envelope, these gummed parts being indicated at g in Fig. 9. It will be apparent, of course, that the movement Of the cradle arms 24 on which the gumming rollers 27 are mounted will have noappreciable effect on the upper end of the yoke 49 which carries the rollers 29 and which is controlled by arm 65. As will also be understood, the rollers 29 are timed to operate slightly in advance of the rollers 27.
The blank with the gum applied thereto then passes downwardly and under the pulleys 21 and 22, the guide 80 directing it into the bight of pulleys 21 and rollers 81. As the blank emerges from the bight of pulleys 22 and rollers 82, the extended pocket fiap is directed upwardly by the springs 105 and engaged by the toe of the directing member, its front edge sliding up the latter, as the main body of the blank moves forward, until it strikes the angle piece 95 at which time the line of fold will have reached the toe of the member 92 so that, as the blank moves forward, the flap is folded backward by the said member 92 on the main body of the envelope. The re-folded flap is then pressed in place by the rollers 84 while the folding device 86 engages and folds the side flaps 7'.
It will be understood of course that the various devices will be so arrangral and spaced as to properly control the passage of the blank through the machine.
What we claim is as follows:
1. In an envelope making machine. means adapted to operate in the order named to fold a blank having side sealing flaps to present a body having a pocket flap at its mouth, fold back said pocket flap. apply gum to the pocket flap and side flaps. and fold said pocket flap and side flaps upon the body of the envelope. 'and separable operable devices adapted to apply gum to said envelope for securing respectively the pocket flap and side flaps upon the body of the envelope as the latter passes through the machine.
3. In a machine for making pocket clasp and side sealing flap envelopes. means adapted to,fold a blank to present a pocket flap, means for folding back said pocket flap, and separably operable devices adapted to apply gum to said envelope for securing respectively the pocket flap and side flaps upon the body of the envelopes.
4. In a machine for making pocket clasp and side flap sealing envelopes, means adapted to open out the pocket forming element of the envelope, and separably operable de vices adapted to apply gum tosaid envelope for securing respectively the said pocket forming element and the side flaps upon the body of the envelope.
5. Ina machine for making pocket clasp and side flap sealing envelopes,.means adapted to open out the pocket forming elementof the envelope, and separably operable devices, adapted to apply gum to said envelope for securing respectively the said pocket forming element and the side flaps upon the body of the envelope, and means for folding said pocket forming element and side flaps upon the body of the envelope.
6. In an envelope making machine, envelope conveying means, gum applying means including a swinging arm, a gumming roller carried on the free end thereof, a second arm mounted .on said first arm co-axial to ,said roller, a gum applying roller carried by the free end of said second arm, a transfer roller mounted co-axial to said first roller and adaptedto convey the gum to said second roller, and separably operable means for moving said gum applying rollers toward and away from the envelope engaged by said conveying means.
7. In an envelope making machine, envelope conveying means, gum applying means including a swinging arm, a gumming roller carried on the free end thereof,-'a second arm mounted on said first arm co -axial to said roller, a um applying roller carried by the free end of said second arm, a transfer roller mounted co-a-xial to said first roller and adapted to conveythe gum to said second roller, and separably operable means for moving said gum applying rollers toward and away from the envelope engaged by ,said conveying means, said last mentioned means including cams operated in synchronism with said envelope conveying means, and operative connections between the cams and the said arms.
8. In an envelope making machine, envelope conveying means, gum applying means including a swinging arm, a gumming roller roller, and separably operable means for moving said gum applying rollers toward and away from the envelope engaged by said con-- veylng means, and means for I adjustably mounting said second arm on said first arm, for the purpose stated.

shaft journaled in the lower ends of said cradle arms, a gumming roller and a transfer roller on said shaft, a yoke having downwardly projecting legs journaled on said shaft at their lower ends, a shaft-journaled in the legs of said yoke near the upper ends thereof, a gumming roller carried by said last shaft in registry with the said transfer roller, means for swinging said cradle arms, and separately operable means for swinging said yoke, and means for rotating each of said shafts.
11. In an envelope making machine, a frame, gum applying means including a pair of cradle arms suspended in said frame, a shaft journaled in'the lower ends of said cradle arms, a gummin roller and a transfer roller on said shaft, a s aft journaled in the legs of said yoke near the upper ends thereof, a gumming roller carried by said shaft in registery with the said transfer roller, a bearing element in each of said cradle arms supporting the said shaft, and means for adjustably supporting said yoke on said bearin element.

a shaft-journaled in the lower ends of said and means for adjustably supporting said yoke on said bearing element, said means including a screw depending from said bearing element. and a nut threaded on said screw and having said yoke resting thereon.

In an envelope making machine, a frame, gum applying means including a pair of cradle arms suspendedin said frame, a shaft journaled in the lower ends of said cradle arms, a gumming roller and a transfer roller on said shaft, a shaft journaled in the legs of said yoke near the upper ends thereof, a gumming roller carried by said shaft in registry with the said transfer roller, a bearing element in each-of said cradle arms supporting the said shaft, a slotted bearing box formed in each of' said yoke legs in which said bearing element is slidably engaged, a screw depending from said bearing element and passing freely through the bottom of said bearing box, and a nut threaded on said screw.

In an envelope making machine, gum applying means including a fountain, a table on which said fountain is supported, a pair of slidable posts carrying said table, a rock shaft, a pair of arms fixed on said rock shaft and operatively connected to said posts, and a handle on said rock shaft, and a spring pressed stud carried by said handle and adapted to engage over a suitable support to hold the said table in raised position.
16, In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to unfold the pocket forming element, gum applying means, means for refolding said pocket forming element including a guide table, an angular member spaced above said table and including substantially vertical and horizontal arms, a stop on said vertical arm, and a spring on said guide table adapted to direct the said pocket forming element upward to engage the vertical arm of said member.
17. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to unfold the pocket forming element, gum applying means, means for refolding said pocket forming elementincluding a guide table, an angular member spaced above said table .and including substantially vertical and horizontal arms, a stop on said vertical arm, and a spring on said guide table adapted to direct the said pocket forming element upward to engage the vertical arm of said member, and a device adapted to engage the clasp element of the envelope to retain the latter against displacement from the pocket forming element as the latter is refolded.
18. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to unfold the pocket forming element, gum applying means, means for refolding said pocket forming element including a guide table, an angular member spaced above said table and including substantially vertical and horizontal arms, a stop on said vertical arm, and a spring on said guide table adapted to direct the said pocket forming element upward to engage the vertical arm of said member, and a device adapted to engage the clasp element of the envelope to retain the latter against displacement from the pocket forming element as the latter is refolded, said device comprising a roller carried above said table.
19. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to unfold the .pocket forming element, gum applying means, and means for refolding the said pocket forming element.
. 20. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means for advancing the envelope through the machine, and means for sealing the ends of the pocket to the body of the envelope.
21. In a machine for making pocket clasp and side sealing flap envelopes, means for advancing the envelope through the machine, means for sealing the ends of the pocket to the body of the envelope, and means for sealing the side sealing flaps to the body of the envelope and to the ends of the sealed pocket. 7
22. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to fold the opposite ends of a blank together to jointly form. a pocket and clasp. and means for securing the ends of the folded pocket to the body of the envelope,
23. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means for transversely folding a blank adjacent the middle of its length to form the bottom edge of the envelope, means for double folding together transversely the free ends of the blank upon the body of the envelope toform a pocket and clasp at the mouth or top edge of the envelope, and means for applying gum and securing the ends of the folded pocket to the body of the envelope.
24-. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes from a blank having side sealing flaps, means adapted to fold the {opposite ends of the blank together to jointly form a pocket and clasp, means for securing the ends of the folded pocket to the body of the envelope and means for securing the side sealing flaps to the ends of the folded pocket and the body of the envelope.
25. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes, means adapted to double fold the ends of a blank. together to jointly form a pocket and clasp, means for opening the latter of said joint folds, means for applying gum to the opposite ends of the pocket flap thus opened, and means for refolding said latter fold and securing the ends of said folded pocket to the bodyof the envelope.
26. In a machine for making pocket clasp envelopes from a blank having side sealing flaps, means adapted to double fold the ends of the blank together to jointly form a pocket and clasp, means for opening up the latter-of said joint folds, means for applying gum to the opposite ends of the pocket flap thus opened and to the side sealing flaps, vmeans for refolding the opened up pocket. flap and sealing the ends thereof to position.
